India vs South Africa, T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight Preview
India vs South Africa T20 World Cup 2026: India have set the T20I bar remarkably high – 12-0 in the T20 World Cup and 45-4 (2 NRs) in bilaterals since the 2024 World Cup – that even an above-par total seems routine and a perfect record appears garden variety. Expectations have soared to such levels that questions are being raised about the team being underwhelming in the World Cup show.
“The batting bomb has not exactly exploded,” Suryakumar Yadav was told. “We scored 190 (193, in the last match against the Netherlands), what else is needed,” the captain said on the eve of the Super Eight clash against South Africa.
Concerns largely revolve around Abhishek Sharma, who is yet to open his account in the World Cup and has returned three ducks. Known for his swashbuckling batting at the top, he has been uncharacteristically quiet.
“I worry for the people who are worried about Abhishek’s form, I worry about them. Last year he covered for us, now we will cover for him,” the captain said, ruling out any possibility of bringing in Sanju Samson for Sunday’s fixture.
The captain also dismissed speculation about Samson replacing Tilak Varma. Tilak has not lived up to his explosive reputation but is set to continue at No. 3. Samson, however, has 253 runs in five innings against South Africa at a strike rate of 190 with two centuries.
Oppositions have opened with an off-spinner against India, with Salman Ali Agha and Aryan Dutt striking early. Whether South Africa will follow suit with Aiden Markram remains to be seen. “I have no clue. In all fairness, don’t know, we’ll see,” Quinton de Kock said.
The black-soil pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium assists swing in the first two overs, especially under lights in Ahmedabad. Abhishek may have more to contend with swing than spin early on. Deliveries shaping away have suited strokes over point, while those coming back in are accessed through mid-wicket or square leg.
Head to head, India lead South Africa 5-2 in the World Cup and 7-2 since the final in Barbados. South Africa have played most of their league matches in Ahmedabad, though Indian players are familiar with the conditions.

What They Said
“It’s going well in the Powerplay. We’re making 40-50 runs. That’s normal cricket. Expectation is to make 220, 240, 250. But wickets are a little different here,” said Suryakumar Yadav.
“We’ve played a day game and a night game. But the Indian teams have played here through IPLs, so I don’t think it plays that much of a difference,” said Quinton de Kock.
