Why Is Teqball Attracting More International Attention in 2026?

Teqball is attracting growing international attention in 2026 after reaching an important milestone at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.

The sport, which combines elements of football, table tennis, freestyle football and Southeast Asia’s sepak takraw, made its debut as an official medal sport at the Asian Games. Its arrival at one of Asia’s biggest sporting events has introduced teqball to a much wider audience and strengthened its ambitions for further international recognition.

But what exactly is driving the sport’s rapid growth?

What Is Teqball?

Teqball is a relatively young sport. It was invented in Hungary in 2014 and combines football skills with a specially designed curved table.

Players use different parts of their bodies to return the ball over the table, but they cannot use their hands or arms. In singles, players can use a maximum of three touches to return the ball. The rules require considerable control, balance, technique and quick reactions.

The sport’s unusual format makes it visually different from conventional football while still appealing to people who already enjoy the world’s most popular sport.

The Asian Games Have Given Teqball a Major Platform

One of the biggest reasons for teqball’s growing visibility is its inclusion in the 2026 Asian Games.

The Olympic Council of Asia officially added teqball and padel to the Aichi-Nagoya programme as medal sports. The Games feature athletes from 45 countries and regions competing across 43 sports.

For a sport that is only about a decade old, reaching such a major multi-sport competition represents a significant step.

The Asian Games provide teqball athletes with the opportunity to compete in front of international audiences while allowing fans who may have never encountered the sport to learn about it.

The First Asian Games Champions Have Already Been Crowned

The first teqball medal competitions at the Asian Games have already produced new names in the sport’s history.

South Korea’s Lee Jun-suk became the inaugural men’s singles Asian Games champion after defeating Iraq’s Ali Jalil Mezher Alelayawi 2-0 in the final. Lee remained unbeaten throughout the competition, winning all five of his group matches before progressing through the knockout rounds.

Thailand also made a strong impression in the inaugural competition, winning three of the five available teqball titles. Other medals went to athletes from several Asian countries, demonstrating the sport’s growing geographical reach across the continent.

These first champions now have a unique place in teqball history.

Football Connections Are Helping the Sport Grow

Another factor behind teqball’s international attention is its strong connection to football.

The sport was originally developed from football training and requires players to demonstrate many of the same technical skills associated with football, including ball control, passing accuracy, touch and coordination.

Former Spain and Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has also been involved in promoting teqball. The Olympic Council of Asia invited Puyol to Nagoya to help promote the sport during the Asian Games.

The involvement of a well-known football figure gives teqball additional exposure among football fans who might otherwise be unfamiliar with it.

Social Media Is Helping Teqball Reach Younger Fans

Teqball also fits naturally into the modern social-media environment.

The sport produces short, visually impressive moments that can easily be shared through video platforms. Players can perform difficult touches, volleys and tricks on the curved table, creating content that can attract viewers even when they have limited knowledge of the rules.

Its connection to freestyle football has also helped it reach audiences interested in football skills and entertainment.

The Japan Times reported that teqball has been on an upward trajectory since its creation, with its international federation established in 2017.

Asia Could Become an Important Market

The Asian Games debut is particularly significant because several Asian countries already have sporting cultures that can help teqball develop.

Teqball shares some similarities with sepak takraw, a popular Southeast Asian sport in which players use their feet, head and body to control a ball over a net.

That familiarity with technical ball skills could make teqball easier for some athletes and fans in the region to understand.

The sport has also attracted athletes with backgrounds in football and sepak takraw. South Korean player Lee Jun-suk, for example, previously played football before moving into teqball.

More Countries Are Getting Involved

The growing number of countries participating in teqball is another indication of its international expansion.

At the 2026 Asian Games, athletes from countries including South Korea, Thailand, Iraq, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, Japan and others competed in the sport.

India’s Quimcy Dsouza also attracted attention after reaching the women’s singles semifinals. Her run gave Indian fans another reason to follow a sport that was making its Asian Games debut.

Such performances can help national federations identify new athletes and encourage more people to take up the sport.

Could Teqball Become an Olympic Sport?

Olympic recognition is one of the biggest long-term ambitions surrounding teqball.

The International Teqball Federation has described the Asian Games appearance as an important milestone on its journey toward Olympic inclusion.

However, appearing at the Asian Games does not automatically guarantee Olympic inclusion.

Sports seeking a place in the Olympic programme generally need broad international participation, established governing structures and compliance with Olympic requirements. Teqball’s growing presence at international competitions could nevertheless strengthen its case for consideration in the future.

What Makes Teqball Different?

One of teqball’s biggest advantages is that it does not require a large playing field.

A curved table and relatively small playing area can allow the sport to be played in different environments compared with traditional football.

It also places a strong emphasis on technique rather than physical contact. Players need excellent ball control, timing, flexibility and concentration.

These characteristics make it possible for football players, freestyle athletes and competitors from other technical sports to transfer some of their existing skills into teqball.

A Sport Still Building Its Global Identity

Despite its recent growth, teqball remains much less established internationally than football, tennis or basketball.

Its challenge now is to turn attention from major events such as the Asian Games into sustained participation.

That could involve expanding national federations, developing youth programmes, organizing more international competitions and making the sport accessible to new players.

The first Asian Games appearance provides an important foundation, but long-term growth will depend on what happens after the spotlight moves elsewhere.

Why 2026 Could Be an Important Year for Teqball

Teqball’s appearance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games represents one of the most important developments in the sport’s short history.

Its combination of football skills, an unusual playing surface and visually appealing rallies has helped it attract interest from athletes and fans. The involvement of football personalities such as Carles Puyol has provided additional visibility, while the Asian Games have given the sport a major international platform.

The first Asian Games champions have now been crowned, giving teqball a new chapter in its international development.

Whether the sport eventually reaches the Olympic Games remains a question for the future. For now, however, its successful Asian Games debut has shown that teqball is becoming increasingly visible on the international sporting stage.
