SUMMARY
Ishan Kishan’s journey in Indian cricket stands out because his roots originate in Jharkhand. With MS Dhoni being the biggest name from the state, Kishan also developed into a wicket-keeping batsman. A left-handed opener, he first came into the spotlight in 2016 when he was chosen to lead the India Under-19 team in the U-19 World Cup held in Dhaka.
Although he scored only 73 runs in six innings during the tournament, he successfully led India to the finals. Soon after, he made a strong impact in domestic cricket by finishing as Jharkhand’s leading run-scorer in the Ranji season with 799 runs. His highest score of 273 against Delhi remains the highest by a Jharkhand batsman.
His performances in franchise cricket further strengthened his reputation. The 2020-21 IPL season in the United Arab Emirates played a key role in his rise, where he scored 516 runs for Mumbai Indians. This performance earned him selection in the Indian national team for the home T20I series against England, followed by his ODI debut against Sri Lanka.
The biggest highlight of his international career came in 2022 when he scored a double hundred against Bangladesh. He also played an important innings of 82 against Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup and was included in the 2023 World Cup squad.
Despite strong performances, competition among wicket-keeper batsmen remained intense. Players like Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Sanju Samson, and Dhruv Jurel also competed for opportunities in the Indian team.
His career faced challenges when he was dropped from the annual contract list for the 2024 season. Due to mental fatigue, he did not participate in domestic matches for Jharkhand. However, he remained in demand in franchise cricket and was signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 11.25 crores ahead of the 2025 season.
