2017 Champions Trophy victory remains career highlight
His captaincy period is best remembered for Pakistan’s victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy in England, where Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs in the final to end an eight-year wait for an ICC title.
Sarfaraz also led Pakistan in 100 international matches across formats including 50 ODIs, 37 T20Is and 13 Tests. During his leadership Pakistan reached the No.1 ranking in T20I cricket and achieved a world-record run of 11 successive T20I series victories.
ICC titles at junior and senior level
He also became the only Pakistan captain to win ICC titles at both junior and senior levels. Earlier he captained Pakistan to the ICC U19 World Cup title in Sri Lanka in 2006, a tournament that also ended with a final victory against India.
During his captaincy he supported several players early in their careers including Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan.
Awards and later career
For his contributions he received Pakistan’s Pride of Performance award in 2018 and became the youngest Pakistan captain to receive the honour.
His appearances reduced across formats after the emergence of Mohammad Rizwan. His last appearance for Pakistan came in the Perth Test in December 2023.
Future role in Pakistan cricket
He is now being widely considered for coaching responsibilities with the national team as Pakistan prepares for changes after a Super Eight exit in the recent T20 World Cup 2026.
